CUSHING, Iowa -- Lavonne D. Volkert, 90, of Cushing passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Beverly J. Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein, Iowa. Online condolences can be made at www.nicklasdjensenfh.com.

Lavonne Doris (Hefner) Volkert was born Nov. 11, 1921, in Nora Springs, Iowa, to Lawrence "Oliver" and Alvena (Zoch) Hefner.

On June 5, 1945, she married Virgil Volkert. She taught school in Cushing until 1968, when she worked with Virgil until retirement.

Lavonne was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she served her Lord in many capacities. She was very active in both the church and community.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Charlene (Jim) Camenzind of Omaha, Marlys Neis of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Paula (Randy) Dreeszen of Iowa City, Iowa, and James (Carol) of Huron, S.D.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Hefner and Beverly Volkert; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Loren and his wife, Doris; brother, Verdene; and a son-in-law, Robert Neis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Big Sioux Alzheimer's or Horn Community Health (Home Health).
