SMITHLAND, Iowa — Clemence C. "Clem" Claus, 80, of Smithland died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St John's Evangelical Church in rural German
City, Iowa. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, with military rites. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer at 7 p.m., at Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa.

Mr. Claus was born Oct. 1, 1919, near Smithland, the son of Edwin and Jennie (Callaghan) Claus. He attended school near Smithland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Macil Hall on Jan. 2, 1943, in Tacoma, Wash. Following the war, the couple made their home on the family farm near Smithland. They moved into Smithland in 1984.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church and American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 666 in Smithland. He served as Smithland City Council and on the Smithland school board. He enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Kent and Diane of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter and her husband, Sheryl and Chuck Oddo of Valley, Neb.; two sisters, Lenora Burkhart of Smithland and Edalene McNutt of Mapleton, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Richard and Leora Claus of Solvang, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jason and Jill Claus, Brian Oddo and Sharmel Farnsworth; and six great-grandchildren.
