Mapleton, IA - Longtime businessman, Dennis Reed, 74, of Sioux City, Iowa and formerly of Winterset and Mapleton, Iowa died Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

The funeral service will be Thursday February 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Pastor Scott Jensen officiating. Graveside services and burial will be in the Lanesboro Cemetery in Lanesboro, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 1 after 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a time of
sharing at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Dennis Harry Reed was born January 18, 1938, at Lake City, Iowa, the son of Harry and Ruth (Sylvester) Reed. He was raised in the Lanesboro, Iowa area and attended country school through the 5th grade. Denny began his business ventures at the age of 14 when he owned and operated a hay baler. In 1955, he graduated from Lohrville High School with his high school sweetheart, Agnes Louise "Aggie" Best.

Denny and Aggie were married March 2, 1957, in the Country Church at Glidden, Iowa. He worked at Security Savings in Scranton where he soon started an insurance agency.

In 1968, Denny and Aggie purchased Ulrich Furniture Store in Mapleton, Iowa, moved their family there, and opened their new business, Reed Furniture. He expanded the business opening stores in Scranton, Carroll, and Cherokee, Iowa. He built a new store in Mapleton which now houses the Bomgarrs Store. In the early 80's he closed the stores and returned to the insurance business at Equitable Insurance in Sioux
City.

While in Mapleton, Denny was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, served on the City Council and was Mayor Protem for one term along with other volunteer positions.

In 1992, the couple moved to Winterset, Iowa where Denny worked at the Investment Center. He then started his own investment brokerage firm, Investment Center of Winterset and later renamed it Bridges Financial. In 2007, he sold his business to Dave LaGrange but continued to work there until retirement in 2009.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset as well as multiple civic groups in the community. Denny was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Winterset Chamber of Commerce, an honor that he and his family have shared great pride in receiving.

In August of 2011, Denny and Aggie moved to Whispering Creek Assisted Living Community in Sioux City to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

During their 54 years of a loving marriage, Denny and Aggie traveled the world by earning trips through his business. They loved to ride snowmobiles and motorcycles and play golf when not working. He truly loved spending time with his three grandchildren.

Cherished memories are shared by his wife, Aggie; daughter, Shelly Christophersen and her husband Joe of Bronson, Iowa and son, Kelly Reed and his wife, Karen, of Sioux, City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tami (Christophersen) Siebersma and her husband Jeff of Moville, Iowa, Sheldon Christophersen of Ute, Iowa, and Abigail Reed of Sioux City, Iowa; one brother, Jack Reed and his wife, Donita of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Patty Addison and her husband, Mick of Lanesboro, Iowa; and brothers-in-law and their wives, Bill and Audrey Best of Fort Dodge, Iowa, David and Joyce Best of Carroll, Iowa, Jerry and Linda Best of Denison, Iowa, Jim and Karen Best of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Pastor Paul and Hari Best of Social Circle, Georgia; along with many nieces and nephews; and lots and lots of good friends.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruth Reed; his parents-in-law, John and Louise Best; a brother-in-law, John Dean Best; a nephew, David Best, Jr.: and a great niece, Rachel
