Correctionville centenarian dies

CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa — Frieda L. Schmidt, 100, of Correctionville died Wednesday in a nursing home in Ida Grove after a short illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville. The Rev. Stanley Roseneau will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery at Midway. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in the Walter Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mrs. Schmidt, the former Frieda L. Hanfeld, was born May 21, 1885, in Cedar County. At age 2 she moved with her family by covered wagon to Wellfleet, Neb. At age 9 she came to the Midway community.

She attended schools in Ida County and worked as a seamstress in a millinery store in Battle Creek before her marriage. She married Lewis C. Schmidt Feb. 12, 1908, near Battle Creek. They farmed in the Correctionville area until 1948, when they moved into town. He died Jan. 28, 1970.

Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville.

Survivors include a son, Walter of Battle Creek; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Viola) Thompson of Colman, S.D., Mrs. Lucile Burow of Cushing and Mrs. Ruby Schroeder of Baldwin; two sisters, Mrs. Rosella Sherman of Denver and Mrs. John (Eldora) Collins of Albuquerque, N.M.; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
