PIERSON, Iowa | Mildred L. King, 92, of Guthrie Center, Iowa, formerly of Pierson, passed away on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at The New Homestead in Guthrie Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at Pierson, Iowa. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mildred Lila King was born on April 21, 1920, near Pierson, Iowa, the daughter of Curtis and Orpha (Baker) Culler. She attended Grand Meadow School near her home. Following high school graduation, Mildred moved to Omaha, Neb. She worked as a nanny during the summers at Lake Okoboji and assisted the war effort by tying parachute knots at a factory in Omaha.

On Sept. 12, 1945, Mildred and Emmett King were united in marriage in Pierson, Iowa. They made their home in Omaha, where Mildred took a position with Mutual of Omaha. Mildred and Emmett moved to Spencer, Iowa, and lived there a brief time until relocating to Storm Lake, Iowa. Mildred stayed home to raise her children while Emmett worked as a radio dispatcher of the Iowa State Patrol. In 1954, the family moved to Goodell, Iowa, and later in 1961, to the Denison, Iowa area.

In 1979, Mildred and Emmett returned to Storm Lake for their retirement years. Emmett passed away in 1991. Mildred remained in Storm Lake until moving to Guthrie Center, Iowa, in 2002. She was active in the Methodist Church and participated in Ladies’ Circle and various church activities. She enjoyed square dancing and playing cards. She had a passion for bird watching and could identify numerous birds by their calls.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Marilyn and Jack Fouts of Bull Shoals, Ark., Steve and Marilyn King of Kiron, Iowa, Kathy and Larry Von Tersch of Platte City, Mo., Jon and Rita King of Guthrie Center, and Gary King of Omaha; grandchildren Brian Fouts, David and Meghann King, Mick and Stephanie King, Jeff and Lindsay King, Pat and Kim Von Tersch, Michelle and Aaron Hays, Jamie and Jennifer Von Tersch, Jeremy and Jacki King, Cherri and Derek Wilson, Taylor King, Jacob King and Josephine King; great-grandchildren, Julia, Rachael and Gabriel King, Kamryn and Reagan King, Jacob, Mallory, Charlie and Madden Von Tersch, Mason and Carter Hays, Bree Von Tersch, Emmett and Ella King, Camden and Kade Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emmett; a grandson, Troy Fouts; sisters, Wilma Chinn, Marjorie Harm and Evelyn Pease; and a twin brother, Maurice Culler.
