Hank was born Dec. 3, 1933, to Henry Joseph Klosterman and Gustava Bea Miles of Sioux City. At 17, Henry joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His active duty on the USS Juneau began May 20, 1951. By the time his service ended on Sept. 29, 1954, he had traveled extensively. He was particularly fond of time spent in Italy and Japan.
In 1957, after time spent laboring with bricklayers in Iowa City at his father's encouragement, and a resulting apprenticeship in Ames, Henry earned a journeyman's card as a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 3 Iowa. Henry was president/secretary-treasurer of BAC Local 3 from March 1995 to 1998. In 2007, he was given special recognition for his 50 years of membership. He maintained a lifetime membership.
In 1973, he was elected a Freemason, and eventually attained the status of 32nd-degree Mason. After retirement, Henry was particularly proud of months spent volunteering in South Dakota on a remote Lakota reservation, where he constructed a recreation center and storm shelter.
Henry enjoyed the artistry of his work, travel, collecting and riding motorcycles and socializing in downtown Iowa City. He was especially proud to have passed along to his grandson, Andy, his trade of masonry.
Survivors include his three children, Star (H ussein) Lynn Safi of Long Beach, Calif., Henry "Jay" (Julie) Klosterman of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Sadie (Brian) Marie Landwehr of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Beverly Nelson of Bloomington, Minn.; a brother, Miles (Deanna) V. Klosterman of Sioux City; friend and former spouse, Cindy Lou Dreher of Iowa City; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Robin Ann Nystrom of Phoenix and Wendy Jane Peck of Iowa City.
Henry will be greatly missed by his family, friends and dogs, Molly and Gloria.
Memorial may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
