August 26, 2012SLOAN, Iowa | Robert “Bob” P. Friis, 84, of Sloan passed away Aug. 22, 2012 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with Monsignor Kenneth Seifried, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Salix, with military honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Robert Paul was born Jan. 17, 1928 in Wilmar, Minn., the son of Hans H. and Edna (Solien) Friis. He graduated from Sloan High School in 1946. He went on to join the U.S. Marine Corps and served for two years.
Bob and Gert Brell were united in marriage on May 6, 1950 in Salix. To this union, five children were born. Bob worked for the National Cash Register for a short time before returning to Sloan to farm, which he loved dearly, until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of the Sloan Fire Department, the Farmer’s Cereal Elevator Board, the Sloan Golf Course Board, the St. Joseph Catholic Church since 1950, and the American Legion George M. Nelson Post 662 in Sergeant Bluff.
Survivors include his wife, Gert of Sloan; five children, Mary Ellen (Greg) Olson of Ruthven, Iowa, Mike (Linda) Friis of Sloan, Peg (Tom) Copple of Sloan, Marcia (Jerry) Sailer of Moville, Iowa, and Dan (Deb) Friis of Menomonie, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Rob (Karla) Copple, Jennifer (Mike) Geelan, Kim Tope, Vicky (Larry) Conlon, Rebecca (Jeremy) Nelson, Jill Black, Christy (Darren) Piercy, Ryan (Lacey) Friis and Danielle Friis; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean (Vert) Paulsen of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Bud Worrell of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Worrell.
Memorials in Bob's honor may be directed to Burgess Hospice in Onawa, Iowa and Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.
