SIOUX CITY | LeeDennis "Lee" Moyer, 51, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, passed away suddenly Aug. 23, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial barbecue will be Sunday in Fort Des Moines Park. The family will be present at 2 p.m. and a simple celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m.

Lee was born in Clovis, N.M., to Virgil and Patricia Moyer. In 1979, Lee was awarded the honor of Eagle Scout in Sioux City and graduated from West High school in 1980. After graduation, he completed military training at Fort Collins in Denver, Colo., then joined the Air National Guard, where he served for 18 years.

Growing up around aviation, Lee had the opportunity to solo his first flight on March 17, 1977, when he turned 16. Since that time, Lee had been a pilot for GP Express in Grand Island, Neb., Pella Windows in Pella, Iowa, Suburban Air Freight in Omaha, and WeStar Aviation in Iraq. Lee owned his own business, where he took aerial photos of farms and provided flying services to the community. Over the last three years, Lee took up a new flying interest of crop dusting in Nebraska. Lee’s passion for airplanes was unsurpassed and he spread this joy by instructing new pilots. In 2008, Lee happily accepted a position with WeStar Aviation in Kirkuk, Iraq, teaching the Iraqi Air Force how to fly.

There was not one type of car that Lee did not have an interest in, but he was particularly enthusiastic about VW Beetles and always had a bug or two ready to be restored. Lee owned an imported car shop in Iowa, where he continued to display his passion for mechanics. If Lee wasn’t in a garage working on a car, you could find Lee at the stove making a delicious concoction out of leftovers in the kitchen.

Lee was active in the lives of his three girls and loved helping out with the Lincoln High School Senior Celebration. All his girls’ friends knew him as Dad and he would always lend a helping hand. Lee was there to watch all his girls graduate from high school and was standing by their side in support of anything they decided to attempt. Lee had a life goal of owning an island in the Caribbean and living on a sailboat.

Lee is survived by his three daughters from Des Moines, Katie (Moyer) and Shawn Henderson, Carolyn Moyer and Michaela (Moyer) and Justin Monroe; his mother, Pat Moyer of Sioux City and Mesa, Ariz.; sister, Arienne Hoberg of Sioux City; brother, Jeff and Chance Moyer of Boone, Iowa; former wife and friend, Sarah Moyer of Kannapolis N.C.; along with many nieces and nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Moyer of Sioux City and Mesa; and brother-in-law, Tom Hoberg of Sioux City.
