Jerry Isaac Cameron, 80, of Salix died Friday, June 10, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Regional Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Jerry was born to Sam and Rowena Cameron on Feb. 15, 1931, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the 174th Fighter Bomber Squadron in Bangor, Maine, and Alexandria, La., during the Korean War.

He married Bernice Sullivan at Dow Air Force Base Chapel in Bangor in 1953. Jerry earned his bachelor's degree at Yankton College in South Dakota, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He also served as president of the Y Club. His master's degree was completed at Wayne (Neb.) State College. He also studied at the University of Northern Iowa, Morningside College, Northeast Missouri State and the University of Maine.

Jerry was a teacher and coach at East High School in Sioux City from 1960 to 1989. He also taught and coached at East Junior High School and in Glidden and Whiting, Iowa.

He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, Iowa Education Association and the American Legion. At the age of 78, he was an official delegate to the Iowa caucuses for Hillary Clinton. He loved sitting by his outdoor fire pit in the evenings with his best friend and brother, Gary, and all of his neighbors that would stop by.

Survivors include Bernice Cameron of Sioux Falls; two sons, Jerry (Theresa) of Aberdeen, S.D., and Curt (Barb) of Vermillion, S.D.; four daughters, Roann (Greg) Redlin of Cleveland, Miss., Tee (Mike) Leffin of Verona, Wis., Sherri Jo (Geary) Jackson of Wichita, Kan., and Denise (San) Nelson of Sioux Falls; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gary Cameron.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Rowena Cameron; and a brother, Conrad Cameron.
