Dr. John Alvin McFarlane, M.D., 88, died July 23, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church, with the Rev. Timothy Blanchard officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Township Cemetery in rural Calumet, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

John was born the son of John and Verla (Walters) McFarlane on May 21, 1923, in Elko, Nev. John graduated from the University of Nevada in pre-med. He attended Washington University in St. Louis for medical school and completed training in urology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He practiced in Sioux City at Plaza Urological P.C. and retired in 1984.

Dr. McFarlane was an outstanding urologist. His urology patients trusted him, knowing him to be compassionate, thorough, and hard-working on their behalf.

In mid-life, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior; ever since that time, his main desire was to live for Christ and serve Him with his whole heart. He was a steady, trustworthy man, unwavering in his faith. As an active member of Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, he was an adult Bible teacher and honored to serve on the board at the Sioux City Gospel Mission.

He was a humble man, requesting not to have his awards and accomplishments listed in his obituary; a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; and a loyal friend to many. He will be missed immeasurably.

In the face of prolonged illness, John showed courage, acceptance and consistency of faith. Even in his last days his kind and gentle spirit comforted those around him. He looked forward to being in his Savior's presence.

Dr. McFarlane is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Janet (Mugge) McFarlane; one son, Ernie (Robin) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Sally (Dean) McFarlane-Parrott, M.D., of Shawnee, Kan.; one daughter-in-law, Natalie McFarlane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, Amanda McFarlane, Chase McFarlane, Clare McFarlane-Parrott and Joshua McFarlane-Parrott; and one brother, Robert McFarlane.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Alvin McFarlane Jr.; and two sisters, Jane Hanks and Helen Paul.

Memorials may be sent to the Sioux City Gospel Mission.
