Marvin J. Petersen, 92, of Anthon died Monday, July 18, 2011, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa, with the Revs. Randy Cormeny and Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery at Midway, with military rites provided by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Marvin Jens Petersen was born Oct. 18, 1918, at rural Danbury, Iowa, the son of Jens C. and Luella (Strackbein) Petersen. He attended rural school in Morgan Township and completed ninth grade at Anthon Public High School. After school, he farmed with his father until he was called to serve his country. He served six months in the states and three years in the European Theater.

In 1947, he married Roberta Lewis Hamann. To this union two children were born, Byron and Rhonda.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He served various positions on St. Paul's Church Board. He was secretary of St. Paul's Cemetery Board for 33 years.

Marvin and Roberta moved into Anthon in 1979 when he retired from farming. From 1982 to 1985 he had a seed store in Anthon. Roberta died June 5, 2007.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Byron and Marcia Petersen of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Rhonda and John Boddicker of Platte City, Mo.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Janice and Tom Umbach of Anthon; twelve grandchildren, Randy Taylor, Suzanne Taylor, Tiffany Fundermann and her husband Bill, Jeni Umbach, Tony Umbach and his wife Allison, Lincoln Umbach, Mike Umbach and his wife Lindsey, Britton Petersen and special friend John Morrisey, Hillary Seuntjens and her husband Peter, Megan Fulk and her husband Brian, Sarah McDaniels and her husband Russell and Zachary Boddicker and his wife Brooke; 15 great-grandchildren, Grant and Mason Taylor, Diedrich and Danielle Fundermann, Keegan Umbach, Josie and Brock Umbach, Jayden and Gavyn Putzier, Jackson Morrisey, Brady and Reagan Seuntjens, Olivia Boddicker and Payton and Kale McDaniels; and a sister-in-law, Enid Petersen of Anthon.

Marvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta, his parents; a granddaughter-in-law, Billie Jean Umbach; three brothers, Robert Petersen, Lester Petersen and Benny Petersen and his wife Vera.
