Doris M. (Bergenske) Ingalls, 71, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 18, 2011, at a local hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Doris was born Feb. 3, 1940, in Ellendale, N.D., the first born daughter of Arthur G. and Myrtle O. (Woodfork) Bergenske. Her family moved to Sioux City when she was a young child. She graduated from Central High School.

On July 1, 1958, she married William E. "Bill" Ingalls. Doris was a wonderful stay-at-home mother to their three daughters. She began volunteering and then working at Webster Elementary, where they attended. Doris worked for the Sioux City Community School District at Webster and Smith Elementary Schools for more than 35 years. She had planned to formally retire this coming September.

Her warm personality, beautiful smile and genuine love for others touched the hearts and lives of her family, friends, numerous students and co-workers on a daily basis. For many years, wherever she went in Sioux City she was greeted by people who knew and loved her and she would always stop to share a hug and good memories with them. Her greatest enjoyment was her family. She also enjoyed traveling with Bill and was especially fond of the Teton Mountains and the hot springs at Glenwood Springs, Colo. Additionally, Doris was a fan of the Chicago Bears, NASCAR racing (Dale Earnhart) and John Wayne.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Bill; three daughters, Laura Ingalls of LaVista, Neb., Christine Thurow and her husband, Jerry of Dubuque, Iowa, and Deborah Coon and her husband, Ray of Parker, Colo.; four siblings, Edward Bergenske and his wife, Barb of Jefferson, S.D., Ardith Vogt of Sioux City, Cora Eilers and her husband, Stan of Sioux City, and Lewis Bergenske and his wife, Sandy of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Edward Greer and his companion, Christine Sypal, and Jessica Newcomb and her husband, Mike; a great-grandson, Jasper Levi Greer, son of Edward and Christine; and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Harold "Gus" Gustafson; and her older brother, Boyd.
