John A McCulloch, formerly of Sioux City, passed away May 2, 2012, at his home in Mesa, Ariz.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, with military rites.

John was born in Sioux City on Aug. 21, 1925, to Angus and Catherine (McKenzie) McCulloch. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of petty officer first class. He trained in Farragut, Idaho, and served in Chincoteague, Va., and Melbourne Fla., with an aircraft ordinance unit. John was honorably discharged from the USS Shangri-La in San Diego, Calif., at the end of World War II. Upon returning to Sioux City he obtained his private pilot’s license in 1947 and worked for his uncles, Joe and Leo McKenzie, founders of McKenzie's Hardware at 805 W. Seventh.

He met Ernestine Boucher and was married in 1948. He managed and then owned the store until his retirement in 1976. John and his wife, Ernie, then moved to Lake Shetek, Minn., and later to Mesa, Ariz., where they both enjoyed golfing, their many friends and traveling.

He is survived by his daughters, Christine, Mary, and Lynn; son, Marc; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Betty Tieck.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ernestine, in June 2011; daughters, Judith and Amie; and son, Joseph.
