Eiko Horlyk, 84, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Private graveside services will be held in Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Eiko Wada was born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Sakai City, Osaka, Japan, to Yasumatsu and Fujie (Tanaka) Wada. She graduated from Otani Girls College and taught kindergarten in Osaka.

On Oct. 30, 1951, Eiko married Emil Horlyk. She came to the United States in June 1952 and became a U.S. citizen in 1956.

Eiko was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Always interested in education, Eiko served on the Irving Elementary School P.T.A. as an officer for more than 16 years. She was honored by the National P.T.A. and was awarded a citation recognizing her hard work over the years. Eiko was also active in the Democratic Party, meeting presidents ranging from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton to Barack Obama.

Eiko is survived by her children, Eric and his wife, Dianne of Des Moines, Enid and her husband, Ken DeVries of Sioux City, and Earl of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Nicole DeVries of Sioux City; a great-granddaughter, Emilee DeVries; and sister, Yukiko Iwasaki, and Chizuko Kuroda of Osaka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil in 1977; and two brothers, Morimasa and Akira.
