April 19, 2012Terry Dwight Hamer, 59, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly from a stroke Monday, April 16, 2012, at a local hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be posted online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Terry was born on Aug. 2, 1952, in Pisgah, Iowa, the son of Dwight E. and Margaret M. (Harmon) Hamer. He grew up in Pisgah, where he graduated from high school. He continued his education at Wayne State College, where he received his bachelor of science degree.
On Aug. 16, 1975, he married Judy Ann Peterson in Woodbine, Iowa.
While in college he started working at Irving F. Jensen Co. in Sioux City. After graduation he continued with the company and worked his way to general operating manager. In 2005, IFJ Co. was sold to Knife River Corp., and afterward Terry became general manager of Knife River Midwest. Throughout 41 years of service, Terry was associated with numerous state and national awards for paving excellence.
Over the years, Terry has served as board member and president of the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the South Dakota Concrete Pavement Association. He also served as a board member of the Associated General Contractors of Iowa. Terry enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling. He was at peace in the outdoors, especially fly fishing with his son-in-law. He was passionate about his granddaughters and cherished the time spent with them.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; a daughter, Emily Foose and her husband, Jeremiah of Farmington, N.M.; a son, Andy Hamer and his wife, Theresa of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three granddaughters, Kathleen and Caroline Hamer and Maggie Foose; his mother, Margaret Hamer of Missouri Valley, Iowa; two sisters, Diane Hanson and her husband, Curt of Fairfield, Iowa, and Linda Terry of Ralston, Neb.; a brother, Tim Hamer and his wife, Mary of Missouri Valley; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Adams, Wayne Breyfogle, Mike Flanagan, Scott Hundwardsen, Bruce Jorgensen, Dan Lewis and Bill Schoonover.
Memorials may be made in his name to Camp Foster YMCA of the Okoboji's or to Mercy Comprehensive Stroke Center.
