Walter Sabasta, 83, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Countryside Retirement Home.

Memorial services will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of The Nativity, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be posted online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Walter was born Aug. 24, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of James and Anna Sabasta. He attended East High School and then worked in California for about a year. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1949 until his honorable discharge in 1953.

On June 19, 1955, he married Dorthy A. Schimmer at St. Francis Catholic Church. Walt worked for the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers, Local No. 57 of Sioux City from 1951 until his retirement in 2005. He continued working part time on various projects well into his 70s.

Walt will be remembered as a man who loved his family and was always in the middle of a project. He was a member of The Church of The Nativity and a former member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorthy; four children, Steven Sabasta and his wife, Karen, Tim Sabasta, Michael Sabasta and his wife, Vikki, and Nancy Cochrane and her husband, Scott, all of Sioux City; a sister, Olga Shpakowsky of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Dayton Sabasta, Stephanie Bowder and her husband, Jason, Jack and Sarah Morris, Christopher Sabasta and Shelby Book; three great-grandchildren, Jesse, Jaxon and Jaci Bowder.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Bulizak and Helen Johnson; and two brothers, Joe Sabasta and Tony Sabasta.
