Kelly Wayne Wasmund, 49, of Owens Crossroads, Ala., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, June 18, 2012, at his home.

Celebration of life services were held June 22 at Hampton Cove Funeral Home in Huntsville, Ala. Burial was in the Hampton Cove Mausoleum. Kelly was born on Oct. 1, 1962, in Huntsville, Ala., to SGM James and Joanne (Dean) Wasmund. He attended East High in Sioux City in the late 1970s and graduated from Butler High School in Huntsville and the University of Alabama (Huntsville) with a masters in biology. Kelly worked for Research Genetics for 15 years as a biologist.

He was united in marriage to Carol Bilyeu on Nov. 22, 1985 in Fayetteville, Tenn.

Kelly’s greatest love was his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman with an incredible love of nature. He spent many summers on Dauphin Island in south Alabama. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He loved restoring Datsuns and was also an ardent Nebraska Cornhusker fan.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, PFC Tyler Dean Wasmund, currently serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Ky.; daughter, Tisha Abigail Wasmund, who will graduate from Virginia College in July; and his mother, Joanne Hammack of Owens Crossroads, native of South Sioux City; special cousin, Andria Tallman Nelson, of Ankeny, Iowa; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Tennessee and Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his father, SGM James Wasmund, native of Dakota City; uncles, Kent Wasmund and Conrad Dean; and a cousin, Michael Dean Tallman.
