Barbara Burnside, 82, of Worthington, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Worthington, with the Revs. Gordon J. Orde and Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Lake Park. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. A celebration of life service will be at a later date in Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

Barbara Ann Burnside was born on June 9, 1929, in Fairmont, Minn., the youngest girl of nine children born to Jake and Geneva (Peterson) Wilson. She grew up on a farm near Round Lake, Minn., where she graduated from high school.

Barbara married Dale Burnside on May 1, 1953, at First United Methodist Church in Worthington and later had one son, Carter. While Dale served in the U.S. Air Force in Amarillo, Texas, she taught there for two years. She attended Waldorf College, Buena Vista College, Drake University, University of Iowa and graduated from Morningside College with a BS degree in teaching. She later taught in Iowa at Lake Park, Excelsior, Bronson, and Sioux City schools for a total of 41 years of experience.

On Nov. 21, 2009, Barbara married Howard McCausland and moved to Worthington. They enjoyed each other's company, family, friends, and traveling south to Texas.

She was active in several organizations such as PEO, ADK, Sioux City Art Center, United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, CMN and AAUW and various others. She enjoyed reading, walking, shopping, traveling to various parts of the world, her grandchildren, and was dedicated to serving the church in lay ministry.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Howard of Worthington; son, Carter (Karen) Burnside and three grandchildren, Cassie, Sherise and Jake of Fremont, Neb.; two stepdaughters, Debra (Bob) Horne of Fulda, Minn., and Barbara (Mark) Opsal of Farmington, Minn.; and five stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale; parents; sister, Carmen; and brothers, Stan, Gordon, Doug and Gerald.

Family requests memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Worthington or Grace United Methodist in Sioux City.
