Dorothy E. Nyberg, 96, formerly of Sioux City passed away quietly on March 6, 2012, at Mesilla Valley Hospice Center in Las Cruces, N.M.

Memorial services celebrating Dorothy's life will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 25, with a short "goodbye" in Logan Park Cemetery following the services, with the Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Dorothy was born "Dorothy Elizabeth Peterson" on May 24, 1916, in Eau Claire, Wis. She graduated from North High School in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1934 and found work during the Great Depression as a secretary right away.

In 1942 she married Curtis H. Lindahl, and they moved to Chicago so Curt could attend Chicago Theological Seminary, where she was secretary to Dr. Samuel Kinchelo, president of the seminary. She became a full-time minister's wife and mother until 1967. She attended college at various times during these years and managed to put together a teaching degree by 1978. Between 1967 and 1981 she taught evening adult basic education classes as well as "English as a Second Language" to immigrant people, many of whom are now American citizens. She also worked part-time for the state of Iowa Job Insurance Department. Between 1981 and 1986, she was employed by the Sioux City Public Schools teaching English to children from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam. She retired in 1986. While in Sioux City she was active in Swedish cultural events, VASA, Sons of Norway, the Sioux City Art Center, the U.S. State Department with the Mayor's Committee for International Development, Sister Cities Program, PEO, Sioux City Senior Center and a wide variety of ongoing Mayflower Church activities.

She was widowed in 1979 when Curt suddenly died and after several more years here, she decided to move to Pilgrim Place, a community of retired religious professionals in Claremont, Calif. In 1997, she married Harold E. Nyberg. They lived in Detroit, Mich., and spent several years dividing their time between Michigan and Florida until settling in Tampa. Harold died in 2007 after almost 10 years, and she continued to reside in Tampa. In 2010, she moved to Las Cruces, where she enjoyed life close to Kris and John and a wide variety of visitors from all around the country.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Phillips and her husband, Dr. John Phillips of Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter, Kristine M. Northcutt and her husband, John of Las Cruces, N.M.; granddaughters, Cody Northcutt Snyder of Westminster, Md., and Staff Sgt., USAF, Morgan B. Northcutt, of San Antonio, Texas. She also is survived by three great-grandchildren, Brendan J. Northcutt, Helena and Daphne Snyder.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen and Henry Peterson; her brother, Rev. Calvin Peterson of Minnesota; her husband, Rev. Curtis H. Lindahl; son, Mark C. Lindahl of Sioux City; and second husband, Harold E. Nyberg of Tampa, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mayflower Church.
