SIOUX CITY -- Richard Karl "Smitty" Smith, Sr., 83, formerly of Sioux City passed away Aug. 16, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Graveside services were held Aug. 23, 2011 in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif. Mass will be 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux City.

The son of Blanch Fay (Parish) and Roland Wilbur Smith, Richard was born on Aug. 5, 1928 in Sioux City.

He married Juanita I. Nitz on Nov. 1, 1947 and they lived most of their 63 years in Sioux City. He Joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 and later worked for the Great Northern Railroad. He then built and operated his own muffler shop until he retired in 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; five sons, Kelly of Surprise, Ariz., Mike (Barb) of Dodge City, Kan., Tim (Judy) of Gilbert, Ariz., Richard (Melani) of Sioux City, and Tom (Sue) of Riverside, Calif.; five daughters, Wendy (Hollis) Barnhart of Las Vegas, Nev., Connie (Kevin) Smith of Ankeny, Iowa, Barbara Smith of Waukon, Iowa, Nita (Roger) Warne of Atlantic, Iowa, and Patti Petersen of Lawton, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles "Bud" Smith and his wife, Lola of Hemet, Calif. He also leaves behind many wonderful and treasured

friendships.

He was preceded in death by brothers, William and James Smith; two sons, Dennis Richard and Terry Lee; and one grandson, Adam Michael Smith.
