Kathleen "Kathy" Estella Banta was born Jan. 18, 1934, at Osgood, Pa., the daughter of Guy Perry and Marie Estella (DeNoma) McClimans. She grew up in Pennsylvania, where she attended school. The family moved to Ohio, and later to South Sioux City, Neb.

Kathy moved to Sioux City, where she met her future husband, Duane "Tuck" Banta, while working at Swift's. They were married on Aug. 17, 1950, in Elk Point, S.D.
