SIOUX CITY -- Lowell Allen "Bud" Brockman, 89, of Fairfield Bay, Ark., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Jan. 2, 2012, exhausted from living a remarkable life.

He will rest in peace overlooking the Puget Sound and Mount Rainier from Gig Harbor, Wash. with his grandson, Jeffrey. Memorial comments may be made online at www.rollerfuneral home.com.

Bud was born June 11, 1922, in Harlan, Iowa, to Carl and Ida Brockmann. After graduating from Harlan High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army with the 34th Infantry Division. He received field commissions during the Tunisian campaign and at Anzio rose to the rank of first lieutenant.

Bud returned home to attend the University of Iowa, where he had the good fortune to meet Ruth Ann Morris. They were married on Dec. 21, 1946, and were devoted to each other for the next 65 years. Le Mars, Iowa, became their home. He graduated from Westmar College in 1950. Over the years, he continued his education at the U of Iowa, earning his master's degree plus hours beyond.

He began his teaching, coaching and administrative career at Moville (Iowa) High School with subsequent stops at Westmar College, Le Mars High School, and Morningside College. In addition to teaching, his duties included coaching football, basketball, track and golf for men and women. He also was a PGA golf professional and was the golf pro at Le Mars Country Club and Morningside Country Club for many years. He continued his PGA membership and instructed golf during retirement.

His teaching assignments focused on the sciences, including chemistry, biology, anatomy, kinesiology and the health sciences. He was head of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department and also served a period as athletic director at Morningside College. He was known as a skilled and compassionate recruiter.

Bud mentored 1,000's of men and women throughout his career. Along the way he earned many awards, accolades and victories, but what he held dear were the relationships he had with his students and athletes. He took delight in celebrating people's successes, ensuring their well being, and sharing their stories.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Beth Lane and husband, Robert of Gig Harbor, Wash.; grandson, Christopher of Seattle, Wash.; son, James of Bradenton, Fla.; brothers, Richard and wife, Karen Brockmann of Shelby, Iowa, and Dewey and wife, Carol Brockmann of Council Bluffs, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ida Brockmann; grandson, Jeffrey Lane; sisters, Edith White and Viola Butterbaugh; and brothers, Lyle and Robert Brockmann.

If you wish to remember his enthusiasm for life, memorials may be directed to Morningside College Athletic Scholarships.
