SIOUX CITY | Donald G. Bales, 86, of Sioux City died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Private family services will be held at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. There will be no visitation. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Don was born on May 5, 1926, in Danbury, Iowa, the son of James and Gladys (Stull) Bales. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Rose Marie Kamp on Aug. 13, 1949, in South Sioux City. Don worked for the Sioux City Stockyards for 37 years and retired as president.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling, gardening and taking care of his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Bales of Sioux City; a son, Donald D. Bales and his wife, Cindy of Elkhorn, Neb.; two daughters, Marie Nolen and her husband, Richard, and Debra Bales, all of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Brigitte Mann and her husband, Steve, Chad Nolen and his wife, Lisa, Brianna Haun and her husband, Jason, Lindsey Kaiser and her husband, Donald, and Shelby Roman; and four great-grandchildren, Connor Mann, Chase Mann, Natalie Haun, and Barrett Haun.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rena Attrill, Delores Bell and Bernice Iverson; and a brother, James L. Bales Jr.

Pallbearers will be Jason Haun, Donald Kaiser, Mark and Steve Bales, Steve Mann, and Chad Nolen.

Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
