SIOUX CITY | James Gregory Morris, 48, of Sioux City died suddenly Friday, May 11, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital, after a brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Blackhawk Center in Winnebago, Neb., with Native American Church services Monday night, officiated by Mitchell “Chiefie” Parker. Burial will be in the Omaha Tribal Cemetery at Macy, Neb. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender, Neb.

James was born July 19, 1963 at St. Vincent Hospital in Sioux City to William and Arlene (Horn) Morris Sr.

James spent his grade school years at St. Augustine’s Indian Mission in Winnebago. He attended West High School in Sioux City and graduated from Flandreau Indian School at Flandreau, S.D. He went on to play football for Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kan.

He married Alexis JoElla DeCora on Feb. 12, 2011, in the Native American Church at Winnebago. James was a roofer by trade for most of his life and was most recently employed at the Winn-a-Vegas Casino in the surveillance department.

James was an active member of the Native American Church.

James is survived by his wife, Alexis; son, James (JJ) Gregory Morris Jr.; two daughters, Michelle Cox and Jenica DeCora; and granddaughter, Aiyana Morris. James is also survived by his mother, Arlene (Horn) Morris; eight sisters; four brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his father, William P. Morris Sr.; a brother, David John Morris Sr.; a sister, Sheila Marie Morris; and his “mom,” Marcia Atilano.
