SIOUX CITY | Dr. John Meinert McCoy, 81, of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Northern Hills Assisted Living.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Allan Reicks officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Remsen, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

John was born on Aug. 12, 1930, in Sioux City, the son of John J. and Dorothy (Meinert) McCoy. He graduated from Trinity High School and attended the University of South Dakota. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1958. He had served in the Iowa Air National Guard for 15 years until he retired in 1988.

Dr. McCoy joined Dr. D.W. Sullivan in his optometrist practice in Sioux City and practiced until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of the American Optometric Association and a past member of the Iowa Optometric Association. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Men's Club.

Survivors include a brother, Roger McCoy and his wife, Della of Sioux City; two sisters, Nancy Campbell of LaCrescenta, Calif., and Judith Thieme of Centennial, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Jean McCoy of Iowa City, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Marian Connolly, Carlos Simpson, Mary Ellen McCoy, and Dorothy Graves; a brother, Richard McCoy; and two infant brothers.

Memorials may be made in his name to the National Federation of the Blind.
