SIOUX CITY | Harry Duane Peterson, 78, of Sioux City passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, at Countryside Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Werley officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present at 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Duane was born on Nov. 28, 1933, in Ticonic, Iowa, to Harry and Mabel (Carroll) Peterson. He graduated from Maple Valley High School with the class of 1951. Duane enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November 1951 and retired as a master sergeant with his honorable discharge in 1972.

He married Shirley May Johnson on July 1, 1953. To this union four daughters were born. He then married Mary L. Kurth on Feb. 14, 1983. Following his military career, Duane worked for Airways Services at the Sioux City Airport and Nelson-Berger Funeral Homes in Sioux City.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Duane is survived by his wife, Mary; and their blended family of four daughters, Connie Peterson, Barb McClure, Laurie Amick, and Terri (Phil) Shatter; three sons, Chuck (Conchita) Kurth, Ron (Jackie) Kurth, and Mark (Medara) Kurth; 16 grandchildren, Melissa Jones, Eric Stone, Renee Stone, Jake Peterson, Rachel McClure, Matthew McClure, Zack Amick, Lexi Amick, Kristin Amick, Colton Kurth, Christian Kurth, Carlee Kurth, Max Kurth, Felica Kurth, Skylar Kurth, and Zachary Kurth; and two great-grandchildren, Madelyn Jones and Riley Burnham (McClure).

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carlyle Peterson; sister, Sharon Peterson; and daughter, Debra Stone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the family for a charity to be determined later.
