IDA GROVE, Iowa -- Phyllis H. Petersen, 71, of Ida Grove died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at her residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Pierson, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Petersen was born March 13, 1930, in Sioux City, the daughter of Herman H. and Lillian (Weed) Pruehs. Phyllis attended school in Sioux City, graduating from East High School in January 1948. She then worked as a secretary for United Wholesalers until June 1949.

On June 11, 1949, Phyllis was united in marriage to Orville Petersen at Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. The couple made their home on a farm south of Pierson for 28 years, retiring to Pierson in 1985. From 1986 through 1991, Phyllis owned and operated the Pierson Country Store.

She was active in the church choir, taught Sunday school and Bible school, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

In 1997, Phyllis and Orville moved to Ida Grove. Phyllis was employed with Woodbury County Community Action Agency as a senior aid, working at Mid-Sioux until retiring in 1999. She enjoyed knitting, reading, painting ceramics and spending time with her family.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Vicki and Mike Stover and Valerie and Randy Petersen, all of Ida Grove, and Steven and Susan Petersen of Pierson; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother and his wife, Les and Laura Pruehs of Louisville, Ky.; and two sisters-in-law, Berniece Pruehs of Ida Grove, and Virginia Pruehs of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville in 1999; and a brother, Edward Pruehs.
