LAWTON, Iowa -- The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Peters, 61, of Glidden, Iowa, formerly of Lawton, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Arrangements in Glidden are under the direction of Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home.

The Rev. Dr. Peters was born Jan. 4, 1941, in Lennox, S.D., the son of Kenneth and Alice (Collins) Peters. He graduated from Anthon (Iowa) High School in 1959, Morningside College in 1963 and Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1967.

He married Lorna Forbes on Aug. 20, 1961, in Sioux City. He received his doctor of ministry degree from McCormick Seminary in Chicago in 1983. He served Elliot Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson, Iowa, as a student pastor during his Morningside years, and Hazel Green Methodist Church in Hazel Green, Wis., while he was a seminary student. He then served as pastor of Eden Presbyterian Church in Rudd, Iowa, Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, Elliot Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson, and presently at First Presbyterian Church in Glidden. He spent three years at Camp and Conference Center in Zephyr Point, Nev., as the program/fund development director prior to moving to Glidden.

While in the Lawton-Bronson area, he was the "voice of the Eagles," announcing the football games and track meets for many years. He kept score for the basketball team and drove the team school bus to away games. He was a substitute school bus driver and general supporter of the community. He was a city council member for nine years in Lawton and served on the Lawton Fire and Rescue squad for 23 years.

He was a member of the Presbytery of Prospect Hill. He enjoyed sports, camping and interacting with people.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Joe Logsdon of Sioux City, and Susan and Jeff Logsdon of Lawton; a son and his wife, Tim and Roxanne Peters of Lawton; eight grandchildren; a sister, Kay Bukovich of Moville, Iowa; a brother and his wife, David and Eileen Peters of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Ruth Eleanor Peters; and a nephew, Michael Peters.

A memorial fund has been established. Memorials may be left at the church or funeral home.
