SIOUX CITY -- Burton F. Chase Sr., 100, of Sioux City died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at a local care facility.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Burton was born July 7, 1910, in Buck Grove, Iowa, the son of Charles and Minnie (Powers) Chase. The family later moved to Castana, Iowa, where he was raised. Burton served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he returned home to help his mother.

Burton met his future wife, Colleen Houser, and they were married on Oct. 4, 1955 in Lavern, Minn. They later made their home in Sioux City. He worked as a custodian for the Sioux City Community School District. He also did carpentry work until retiring.

He loved working with horses, training and breaking them. In his spare time, he repaired saddles and bridles, along with making new ones. He also enjoyed planting tomatoes, sitting outside in the summer time, telling stories to his children and grandchildren about the Depression, farming, horses, his family and his own life experiences.

He was a beloved and respected husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He will be missed.

Burton is survived by his wife of 55 years, Colleen; two sons, Burton F. Chase Jr., and his wife, Kathy of Sioux City and Ronald Chase of Omaha; three daughters, Maxine Fernandez of Pacific Junction, Iowa, Carol and her husband Bruce Garnett of Sioux City and Lola and her husband Jerry Slater of Sioux City; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; his son, Howard Chase; a grandson, Toby Amland; his great-grandson, Toby Amland, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Tammy Brown.
