SIOUX CITY -- Beulah E. Hafits, 100, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, under the care of Holy Spirit Retirement Home and Hospice of Siouxland.

Private graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Beulah was born March 21, 1911, in Ute, Iowa, to William and Nora (Palmer) Nathlich. She attended a one room school house, but did not graduate. She worked as a nurse's aid and candling eggs.

Beulah married Frank L. Baird in 1931. They moved to Sioux City and had two children, Dorothy and Frank. In 1951, the couple divorced. She later married Harry Hafits in 1954. He preceded her in death. She remained in Sioux City for the rest of her life.

Beulah enjoyed playing on the machines in North Sioux City. She was a good cook and enjoyed fixing meals for her friends and family and playing a good game of cards after eating and usually winning. She kept a very real interest in life and the things going on around her until the end.

She participated in the activities provided by Holy Spirit and loved to play bingo. In fact, she played bingo on Tuesday in her pink sweater and white hair showing up very nicely. she also enjoyed the weekly volleyball game and getting hit on the head by the balloon like ball and watching it dance around the net. It gave them all some good laughs. She enjoyed the retirement home, residents and employees and made friends with some of them. Holy Spirit sponsored a 100th birthday for Beulah on March 21 and was very well received by Beulah and the residents. Thank you, she will be remembered and missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Baird of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Donna R. Baird of Sergeant Bluff; three grandsons, Todd and wife Lori, Brad and wife Kathy and Kirk and wife Angela; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; her son, Frank Baird on Nov. 18, 1998; four brothers; and a sister.
