ANTHON, Iowa -- Margaret R. Handke, 89, of Anthon passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at a hospital in Sioux City.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Margaret Ruth (Farber) Handke was born to Henry and Minnie (Gibbs) Farber on Jan. 16, 1922, in Anthon. She was the eighth of 11 children and the last survivor of the family.

A lifelong Anthon resident, she married Leo Handke in 1941. Margaret took pride in being a housewife.

She enjoyed sewing and used these skills for several people who heard of her talent by word of mouth. She was also a caregiver, providing the extra special love and care needed to her parents, her brother Bud, and to her husband Leo. Leo passed away on Aug. 27, 2009.

Margaret was survived by her son and his wife, Ron and Pam Handke of North Bend, Ore.; two granddaughters, Nicole and her husband, Micah Thorp of Portland, Ore., and Jonna and her husband, Jason Phipps of Forest Grove, Ore.; four great-grandsons, Alexander Thorp, Sebastian Thorp, Cody Phipps, and Carter Phipps; and her dog, Sophie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Minnie; her husband, Leo; brothers, Leo, Bud, Tom, Homer, and Clarence; and sisters, Lena, Edna, Mildred, Mary, and Winifred.
