SIOUX CITY -- Helen Buehlmann, 74, of Sioux City passed away Monday, April 25, 2011, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin Boes officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Helen was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Eugenio and Claudia Lapinig. She grew up and was raised in Kahuku, Hawaii, where she joined the Armed Services.

She met John Hermann Buehlmann and married, moved to Yankton, S.D., where she had Lorna (Wesley D. Martin Sr.) J. Buehlmann-Martin and David (Stacy L.) J Buehlmann. Later they moved to Sioux City, where she and John had Dori (Edward D. Scott) A. Buehlmann-Scott, James (Michelle L.) M. Buehlmann, and Rose (J. Roberto Castaneda) J. Buehlmann-Castaneda.

She worked at Briar Cliff College at the print shop, became the secretary for the priests, and later became their housekeeper.

She was very active in her church and community, later became instrumental in setting up Siouxland Soup Kitchen and managed it for several years. In the 1990s, she moved to Carrollton, Texas, where she retired and kept active by working part-time at Starbucks and served on the church committee there.

She recently returned to Sioux City, to spend time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. After a small stroke she resided at Holy Spirit Nursing home to recover and heal, where there was no recovery, so she was brought home by her family and Hospice.

She was a very strong, loving and giving woman. She loved helping others. She is best remembered for her beautiful warm smile and the gorgeous flower in her hair!

She is survived by her children, Lorna (Wesley D. Sr) J. Martin, David (Stacy L.) J. Buehlmann, Dori (Edward D.) A Scott, James (Michelle L.) M. Buehlamann, and Rose (J. Roberto) J. Castaneda; her grandchildren, Wesley (Emily) D. Martin Jr, Wallace (Amy) D-J Martin, Britani Hamilton, Morgan and James Buehlmann, and Marisa Scott; and great-grandchildren, Caiden, Cooper, and Madison Martin, and Alejandro Rodriguez; and her sisters, Felicia Magallones, Vicky Imperial, Loretta Kelai, and Doris Lagua.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugenio and Claudia Lapinig; sister, Chrispina Latay; brother, Felimon Lapinig; and son-in-law, Wesley D. Martin Sr.

Helen was well loved by her family and friends. She will be missed by her family, friends, and many of those whose lives she touched, but we know her pain is now gone and she is walking with the angels.
