SIOUX CITY -- Duane Henry Poppen, 78, of Sioux City died April 4, 2011, at a local hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Duane was born June 20, 1932, at Sibley, Iowa, to Henry and Tina Marie (Harms) Poppen. He grew up there and attended Sibley Public Schools, graduating in 1950. He later attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, graduating in 1952.

On July 3, 1952, he married Joan C. Gebauer at Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved to Richfield, Minn., where Duane managed a lumber yard. Later, the couple moved to Sioux City, and he went to work for Concrete Products for more than 35 years, retiring as vice president of sales. Duane later decided to start a construction sales business and became a sales representative for multiple construction product companies. He wrote his last sales order just a week before his death.

Duane belonged to St. Mark Lutheran Church, having served on several boards and committees. He was a member of the Sioux City Construction League. He was a former member of the Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite and the Abu-Bekr Shrine Temple Foot Patrol.

Duane's other hobbies were fishing, playing golf and the Sioux City Construction League's weekly golf league as well as telling jokes and teasing his friends and family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Megan; you could always find them together on Sundays having a bowl of matzo ball soup at the Green Gables Restaurant.

Survivors include his daughter, Patty and Jerry Parden of Palm Springs, Calif.; a son, Jon H.D. Poppen of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Megan Poppen of Sioux City; a brother, Roger and Marilyn Poppen of Sibley, Iowa; a sister, Judy and Bing Barenwald of Algona, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan and his parents.
