SIOUX CITY -- Ralph Dennis "Denny" Munch, 67, of Sioux City passed into the presence of the Lord May 4, 2011, after a six-month battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Denny was born June 15, 1943, in Sioux City, the son of Ralph O. and Mary (Rys) Munch. He graduated from Central High School and majored in journalism and construction technology at Iowa State University. He spent his entire career as a structural draftsman at Tri-View Steel in Sioux City, retiring in 2008.

He proudly followed his father in military service by enlisting in the 185th ANG in 1966. He served as a weapons mechanic for six years during the Vietnam War era. He left the 185th in 1972 to devote more time to a growing family, but re-enlisted in 1987. He then served in the disaster preparedness division as an instructor. He was deployed overseas numerous times and greatly enjoyed seeing other parts of the world. He retired in 2003, having attained the rank of master sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff.

Denny was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed tradition. It was not until his college years, however, that a pastor's son, local architect Jim Brygger, challenged him with the truth that a relationship with God was more than the keeping of certain ordinances or sacraments. It was found through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Denny placed his faith in the completed work of Christ and entered by faith into a personal relationship with God on May 5, 1963.

He married Carolyn Edgar on April 27, 1968, in Sioux City. They lived most of their married life in or near Sioux City.

Denny loved the outdoors, fishing, trapping, hiking and especially hunting. He loved setting out his goose and duck decoys and sitting in the bottom of his goose pit with his gun and a sack lunch just waiting for the honkers to come in.

Denny is survived by his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Jon and his wife, Holly of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Jeritt of Sioux City; three much loved grandchildren, Hannah Grace, Elyssa Rose and Jedediah James; and his sister, Nancy of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his parents-in-law.
