CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- Bernice M Brauninger, 83, of Correctionville passed away on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Correctionville.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church of Correctionville, with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in the Correctionville Cemetery at Correctionville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. The Nicklas D Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville is in charge of the arrangements.

Bernice Brauninger was born on Feb. 19, 1927, on a farm in Morgan Township, north of Danbury, the daughter of George and Katherine (Jansen) Botcher. She attended Pat King country school all eight years. Bernice attended the Anthon High School the first two years and Correctionville High School the last two years, taking normal training. She graduated as salutatorian of her class. She later attended Wayne State Teacher's College and Iowa State Teacher's College. She taught rural school, and also spent one summer working for the government during World War II at Lost Angeles in the defense department shipping out parts. She worked alongside Italian war prisoners who helped with the larger boxes. She also worked at Genelle's Studio before her marriage.

On Nov. 9, 1956, she married Lewis Brauninger in Battle Creek, Iowa. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Correctionville. About three years after their marriage, they adopted Fred (8) and Clark (7). After retiring from farming in 1986, Lewis and Bernice traveled in their 5th wheel to most of the states and many provinces across Canada. They belonged to the Good Sam Club and were members of the Methodist Church. Bernice served as Kedron Township clerk for 22 years.

Bernice was an active member of the church, where she served on the board pastor parish, delegate to conference, lay leader, held every office in U.M.W., taught Sunday school, Bible school, was a youth director, and also a member of Town and Country.

Survivors include her sons, Fred Brauninger of Correctionville, and Clark and Ruth Brauninger of Correctionville; five grandchildren, Candy and husband, Pat Langschwager, Ryan and wife, Summer Brauninger, Beau and wife, Heather Brauninger, Kady and husband, Brian Smith, and Nikki Bauer; nine great-grandchildren, Morgyn and Mayson Langschwager, Sydney, Colin and Cael Brauninger, Cloe and Xoe Brauninger and Jordan and Logan Bauer; three nieces; and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her only sister, Adeline.
