SIOUX CITY -- Betty A. Rude, 86, of Sioux City, formerly of Holly Springs, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 7 p.m. today at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff, with the Rev. Katie Newman officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Willow Cemetery, rural Holly Springs. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty was born in Sac County, Iowa, on April 16, 1924, to August and Elsie Hansen. She was the youngest of four girls, Fern, Opal and Eleanor. She attended National Business Training and worked in Sioux City during World War II.

In 1946, she married Army veteran, Oscar Rude of Holly Springs. They had three children, Jo Ellen Ross of Iowa City, Dale Rude (Mari) of Houston, Texas, and Craig Rude of Hornick, Iowa. She moved to Sioux City in the early 1990s.

Betty enjoyed sharing Craig's beautiful amaryllis flowers with her friends, reading, watching Kirk Heindrich and Steve Nash play basketball, and watching TV shows, in particular, Lawrence Welk, the judge shows and Family Feud. One of Jo Ellen's favorite memories was a trip to Branson, Mo. to see the taping of a Welk reunion show. Every musical number had multiple standing ovations which provided good exercise for both. Betty also enjoyed an occasion trip to Winn-A-Vegas.

Betty had a dry sense of humor and would tell new acquaintances the reason she was so smart was that her sister, Fern, was her first grade teacher.

Betty is survived by her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar in 1987; and three sisters, Fern Rehder, Eleanor Bohen and Opal Hansen.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staffs of Holy Spirit Retirement Home, Mercy Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, and Hospice of Siouxland. Also to Dr. William Blankenship for his expert juggling of Betty's numerous health problems, and Susie Hanus, Pat Peebles, and her other friends at Pheasant Acres Apartments.
