25 August 2010SIOUX CITY -- Harry S. McDuff, 93, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at his residence after a 40-year battle with heart disease.
Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Torey Lightcap as celebrant. Entombment will be in the St. Thomas Episcopal Columbarium. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Tyrian Lodge 508, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Harry was born in Omaha on July 29, 1917, to Harry H. and Ethel (Treat) McDuff. He graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1935, and earned an economics degree from Grinnell College in 1939. Harry worked for the Farm Credit Administration in Omaha from 1939 to 1941. Travelers Insurance Company employed him in 1941 in Omaha and moved him to Sioux City in 1949, where he retired in 1972. During World War II, Harry served in the U.S. Army.
Harry married Doris Maroney in Omaha on July 2, 1949. They raised three children in Sioux City. Doris passed away on Dec. 28, 1999. On Sept. 7, 2002, Harry married Hennie W. Gripp, and she subsequently died on March 3, 2004.
Harry's life of service began as an Eagle Scout and Scout leader. Harry was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he was a lay-reader, a past senior warden, and a Sunday School teacher. He was secretary/treasurer of the Downtown Kiwanis Club for 10 years. Harry was a member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge 508 A.F. & A.M., Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies (33), Sioux City York Rite Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine, The Shrine Oriental Band, and High Twelve Founders Club 1. For many years, Harry volunteered at St. Luke's Medical Center. In June 2010, he was given an Iowa Governor's Award for volunteerism in recognition of his 35 years of service to Siouxland Meals on Wheels. Harry enjoyed travel, family camping, crossword puzzles, working around his yard and carpentry projects.
Harry is survived by his children, Mary McDuff of Sioux City, Laura Nelson (Robert) of Keystone, Neb., and Tom McDuff of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nielson, Sara Danielson, Megan Danielson, and Kelsey Nelson; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hospice of Siouxland or the Sioux City Scottish Rite Building Preservation Corporation.
Above all, Harry was devoted to his family and God. His concern for others was one of his most endearing traits. Harry was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
