SIOUX CITY -- Vali M. Sorathia, 71, of Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Islamic Center of Siouxland, 2701 Willow Street in South Sioux City. Burial will be in the Dakota City (NE) Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Vali was born Nov. 10, 1938, in India. He was the son of Abdul Karim and Hajra Bai (Mammad) Sorathia. Vali came to the U.S. in 1963, and attended Indiana University on a Fulbright Scholarship. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He held a master's degree in economics from the University of Karachi in Pakistan and Indiana University.

He married Raffat Sorathia in 1984. Vali was a professor of accounting at Briar Cliff University for over 30 years. During his tenure at Briar Cliff, he offered great support to Briar Cliff and provided tremendous involvement on faculty committees, panel discussions and lectures. When he retired in 2008, the "Vali Sorathia Endowed Scholarship" was established by the Briar Cliff accounting alumni.

Survivors include his wife, Raffat Sorathia of Sioux City; a son, Nabil Sorathia of Sioux City; his mother, Hajra of Maryland; and eight brothers and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father, Abdul Karim Sorathia in 1975.
