MAPLETON, Iowa -- Carl A. Mohrhauser, 78, of Mapleton died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Carl Albert Mohrhauser was born April 29, 1931, in Mapleton, the son of John and Anna (Hupke) Mohrhauser. He was raised in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1949. He entered the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict.

By profession, he was a carpenter and worked his entire career for various companies in the Mapleton area.

He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496. He enjoyed reading, fishing, doing word search and working in his carpenter shop. He also enjoyed giving away the numerous items he made. He was the self-proclaimed "nicest guy in Mapleton" and those who loved him whole heartily agree.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, LuAnn and her husband, Rick Vogel of Fremont, Neb., and Karla and her husband, John Butterbaugh of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Brandon and Alexandria Vogel and MaKenna Dopheide; two sisters, Arlene Hinrickson of Mapleton and Anna Marie Streeter of Nisland, S.D.; several nieces and nephews; a devoted friend, Mark Lorenzen of Charter Oak, Iowa; and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Jeff; and five sisters, Devota, Evelyn, Edna, Joann and Frances in infancy.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the numerous physicians and nurses at Maple Valley Mercy Medical Clinic and Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City who cared for Carl. A special thank you to the staff at Maple Heights Nursing Home for the loving care they provided while he was a resident.

Memorial may be directed to the family.
