SIOUX CITY -- Arthur "Dan"Detches, 72, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dan was born July 9, 1938, in Sioux City, the son of Paul L. and Pauline D. (Oestereich) Detches.

He married Sandra J. Breaman on June 27, 1955, in Elk Point, S.D. She died July 7, 2005, in Sioux City. For 12 years, he was a custodian for the Sioux City Community Schools. He retired from I. Miller Paper Co., where he worked as a warehouse manager for 20 years.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Being an avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed horse racing and watching his favorite football team, the Washington Redskins. Most of all, he was a textbook example of a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Left to cherish his memory are his 10 children and spouses, Dorrie and Connie Barker of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jeanne and Tim Heilman of Sioux City, Dan and Christy Detches of Bellevue, Neb., Barbara and Allen Hickson of Sioux City, Sandy and Phong Tran of Sioux City, Aaron and Debby Detches of Indianapolis, Ind., Paula and Jack Kassing of Dakota City, John and Tracy Detches of Sioux City, Robert Detches and his partner, Duane of Sioux City, and Quentin and Shelly Detches of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Roger and Mickey Detches of Sioux City and Patrick and Genevieve Detches of California; two sisters, Carol Hendricks of Sioux City and Mary and her husband, George Cole of New Mexico; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Rodney Detches.

Pallbearers will be Michael Weaver, Cruz Torres, Andrew Hickson, Michael Tran, Jack Kassing and Allen Hickson.

Memorials may be made in his name to St. Joseph Church Preservation Fund.
