SIOUX CITY -- Ronald Wayne "Red" Coulter, 69, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, following a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Chad Cardwell officiating. Private family graveside services will be held in Coleridge, Neb. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.

Red was born May 27, 1941, in Randolph, Neb., to Lloyd and Mildred (Stapleman) Coulter. He grew up in Randolph and graduated from high school. He later attended Norfolk Junior College in Norfolk, Neb. He transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. After college, he moved to Omaha for a short time, then moved to Sioux City in 1961, where he had remained a resident.

He was employed with the railroad from 1962 to 2002, when he retired from the Chicago Central Pacific. He served various functions during his time with the railroad, but retired as a conductor.

He was a Jehovah Witness. He enjoyed boating, music, dancing, playing cards and mostly socializing. He was constantly visiting friends and family or calling them up on the phone. He always built people up, showing great pride for those he loved and knew. Their stories often grew better with each telling. His smile and laughter were a great presence wherever he was. He will be remembered as the larger than life, fun loving guy with a heart of gold. He would go out of his way to please any and all and was always accepting, no matter the situation.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Coulter of Sioux City; a daughter, Stephanie and Marty McCaslen of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Justin and Ching McCaslen, Jamie McCaslen, Josh and Desiree McCaslen, Jasmine McCaslen and Aubrey Hibbs-McCaslen; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Garner of Omaha; a brother, Lloyd and Linda Coulter of Heyburn, Idaho; and many beloved relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
