SIOUX CITY -- Virginia Lanoie, 92, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home (Virginia referred to it as Holy Spearmint) of natural causes.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Monday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com.

Virginia was born June 24, 1918, in Sioux City, to Richard R. and Carrie (Snave) Bates. Albeit a brief stay in Rhode Island, she was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. Virginia graduated from East High School in 1936, along with numerous additional trainings and certificates contributing to her career of 35 years with the Sioux City Police Department.

Virginia loved ice cream (DQ her preference), Palmer Candy (chocolate peanut clusters) and western movies (with none other than "The Duke" as her favorite). She was an avid reader (providing book reviews for the Sioux City Journal), a dedicated walker (long before it was a cultural fad), a member of the Women's Lutheran Cursillo No. 26, but perhaps best described as "an incredible woman who led a simple life, graceful life... an example of quiet strength and resilience."

Survivors include Karen and David Bates-Brown, John and Deann Bates, Brad Bates and Susan Demer, Tom and Jackie Bates, Debra and Rodney Watson, Laura and Tony Michael, plus a myriad of extended family members whom Virginia loved dearly.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Carrie Bates; and siblings, Donald and Gladys Bates, Ronald Bates and Sandra Bates.
