SIOUX CITY -- Marcellene L. Saunders, 90, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Third Presbyterian Church, with lay minister, Lorna Peters, CLP, and Jill Clem officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Marcellene was born May 5, 1920, in Kingsley, Iowa, to Forrest and Beatrice (Holland) Hammer. She graduated on May 17, 1937, from Kingsley High School.

She was married to Donald L. Saunders on Aug. 18, 1938, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton, Iowa. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1940 and lived in Sioux City until 1950, when they moved to a farm in rural Kingsley. They returned to Sioux City in 1956. She was employed as a medical secretary until 1971. She then went to work for Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a claims auditor until her retirement in 1986.

She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and deaconess. She also sang in the church choir for several years. She was a former member of the American Business Women's Association Charter Chapter and Medical Assistants.

She is survived by her son, John (Julie) Saunders of Holiday Island, Ark.; two daughters, Sally (Lorman) Vilhauer of Sioux City and Carole (Robert) Roche of Surprise, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother.

Memorials may be given in Marcellene's name to Third Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
