HOLLY SPRINGS, Iowa -- Larry A. "Doc" Comly, 70, of Holly Springs died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Church, rural Holly Springs, with the Rev. Paul Mahaffie officiating. No visitation is planned, but there will be a luncheon and a time of fellowship following the service at the church. Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonwoodwillman.com.

Larry Ardon "Doc" Comly, son of Harold Herbert and Pauline Ruth (Craven) Comly, was born June 23, 1940 in Earlham, Iowa. He was raised and educated in New Providence, Iowa, and graduated from New Providence High School with the class of 1958. Following graduation, Doc attended a technical school for a year.

In the fall of 1960, Doc met Alice M. Dawdy. About one year later on March 26, 1961, they were married in New Providence and shortly after they moved back to Holly Springs. To this union one son, Timothy Ardon was born. Doc owned and operated Comly Enterprises on Main Street in Holly Springs for many years. He was an exceptional machinist who could fabricate anything. For a short time, the family moved to Windom, Minn., where Doc manufactured snowmobile trailers for a company. After returning to Holly Springs, he operated Comly Enterprises and drove truck on and off for several companies until retiring from driving in 2006.

Doc loved irritating and agitating people, teaching people his skills, riding his Goldwing motorcycle, and going on annual bike rides to New Hampton, Iowa, and Sturgis, S.D. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church and was leader of the Holly Honkers Motorcycle Club.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter-in-law, Karen Comly of Hornick, Iowa; four grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Vincent "Sonny" Dawdy of Sioux City; other relatives and many close friends.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; son, Timothy Ardon Comly; and one brother in infancy, Lowell Dean Comly.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
