SIOUX CITY -- Thomas Arthur Ware, 54, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, died of cancer Saturday, May 15, 2010, in San Rafael, Calif., surrounded by family.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City.

Tom was born Dec. 19, 1955, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Thomas and Shirley Ware. He was the second of five children. He was a graduate of West High School in Sioux City and attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Morningside College in Sioux City.

Tom enjoyed spending time with his friends and loved ones. Music was very important to Tom. He loved to play his extensive video collection including his cherished complete Star Trek series. Tom exercised throughout his life and was an accomplished swimmer at West High and had returned to swimming in recent years. Tom also enjoyed reading, especially at the Topeka Public Library.

Tom met substantial challenges in life with courage and dignity and was always improving himself. He was an intelligent, gentle, kind and considerate human being who touched all who knew him. We will miss his smile and his sense of humor. We are proud that he was our brother and friend.

Tom is survived by a sister, Susan and her husband, Tim of Bayside, Calif., and their children, Alexandra and Gwen; a sister, Nancy of San Rafael, Calif., and her children, Lauren and Lindsay; a sister, Janet and her husband, Wally of Millstadt, Ill., and their children, Nikolas, Rhea and Hal; and a brother, John of Columbia, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Shirley Ware.
