SIOUX CITY -- Gordon P. Winter, 85, of Sioux City passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at a local nursing home.

Graveside services, with military rites, will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Calvary Cemetery, with Pastor John Hagberg of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Gordon was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Rudolph and Nettie (Engquist) Winter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Otsa, Japan, for 14 months.

He married Elizabeth A. Schwartzmeyer on Aug. 19, 1950, in Sioux City. Gordon and his family lived on the family farm east of Hinton, Iowa, where Gordon farmed until 1975. They then moved to Sioux City, where he worked for the Sioux City Journal until his retirement in 2006.

Gordon was a longtime fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed watching Fred Couples play golf on TV.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth A. Winter of Sioux City; children, Tom and Dorothy Winter of Fremont, Neb., Roger and Annette Winter of Sioux City, Randy and Debbie Winter of Sioux City, and Susan and John Crawmer of Panora, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Warren; and a daughter, Amy Louise, who died in 1974.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Matt, Mark, Chad, Craig, Shawn, Nate and Stephanie.

Memorials may be given to the family to be distributed at a later date.
