SIOUX CITY -- Florence J. Eckert, 97, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010, at a local nursing home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mayflower Congregational Church, with Pastor Dan Lozer officiating. Burial will be in Big Springs Cemetery at Big Springs, S.D. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Florence was born the daughter of John E. and Selma E. (Johnson) Erickson on Feb. 10, 1913, in Beresford, S.D., where she grew up on a farm. She married Frank C. Eckert, and the couple moved to Lincoln, Neb. They returned to Sioux City in 1946. Florence taught country school for a short time.

Florence enjoyed being a volunteer for many years. She helped out at St. Luke's Hospital, provided Meals on Wheels and was a caregiver to those in need. She also volunteered her time at Mayflower Congregational Church for many years. She loved flowers and working out in the yard. She enjoyed animals, especially dogs. Florence liked to spend time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Johnson of Sioux City, Kathryn Wickey of Sioux City, and Carolyn Lekan and Richard Lekan of Wichita, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; one son, Frank "Kenny;" six brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Danny Johnson, Randy Johnson, Rick Johnson, Bob Ericson, Todd Lekan, Adam Johnson, Jacob LeBeau and Myles Pence.
