SIOUX CITY -- Robert "Gunner" Gunsolley, 84, longtime reporter for the Sioux City Journal passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010, in Omaha.

Memorial services were held May 19 at the Skyline Chapel in Omaha. Final resting place is final family interment.

Robert was born May 24, 1925, in Omaha. He graduated from high school in Norfolk, Neb. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he served during World War II in India. After his discharge from the military, he enrolled at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in journalism. After college he moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and took a job with the Sioux Falls Argus Leader as a cub reporter.

Three years later, Gunner took a job with the Sioux City Journal and started his career that lasted 39 years as a reporter covering city government. While he was at the Journal, he met and eventually married Kathleen Howe, the love of his life, who also worked there. They were happily married for 34 years and resided in Sioux City. Kathleen passed away in 2008. Gunner then moved to Skyline Manor in Omaha, where he made many good friends and considered that his home until he passed away on May 16, 2010.

Survivors include his daughter, Jody Shearer; a son, David Gunsolley; a son-in-law, Terry Shearer; granddaughters, Mandy Flores and Megan Gunsolley; grandsons, David Shearer and Matthew Gunsolley; and great-granddaughters, Andrea and Isabel Flores.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Gunsolley; his mother, Margarerite Ripp; his father, Bernard Gunsolley; and a brother, Ward.
