SIOUX CITY -- Terry Lee Johnson, 65, of Sioux City died Friday, May 7, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Terry was born June 11, 1944, in Sioux City, to Martin Sr. and Myrtle (Carver) Johnson. He grew up in South Sioux City, Neb., and graduated from South Sioux City High School. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska.

He married Dorothy "Dottie" Hatterman on Aug. 24, 1974, in Germantown, Iowa.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he joined his uncle Leo in the golf course building business, building golf courses across the Midwest. He then worked as an insurance agent for Mutual of Omaha, and then worked as an independent insurance agent for more than 20 years. Following his retirement from insurance, he returned to building golf courses, building and operating 27 Flags and Iron Horse golf courses in the Sioux City area.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. One of Terry's greatest joys was attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events and cheering them on from the stands. He will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand. He never knew a stranger and helped brighten his family and friends with his colorful life stories. Before his health failed, he loved playing golf, winning numerous tournaments in his day. But, most of all, his favorite times were spent with his friends and family just enjoying life.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie of Sioux City; daughters, Alexes Johnson at home, and Kerri and her husband, Kipp Gibson of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; a son, Kelly and his wife, Karyn Johnson of Dakota Dunes; brothers, Martin Johnson Jr. and his wife, Bobbie, Ron and his wife, Sue Johnson, and Shane and his wife, Michelle Johnson; a sister, Jean Anne and her husband, Lloyd Jensen; four grandchildren, Casey, Keegan and Claire Johnson and Hayley Gibson; and a special aunt, Gertie Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Scott.
