SIOUX CITY -- Alberta Ruth Nelson, 85, of Littleton, Colo., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Julia Temple Alzheimer Center.

Visitation with family present will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd. The Rev. Stephen Niles will officiate. A private family graveside service will be held.

Alberta was born on Aug. 2, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Albert F. and Virna (Clawson) Drager. She graduated from Central High School in 1942. She married James Alvin Nelson on March 4, 1943, in Sioux City. Alberta was a war bride in Sioux City while Alvie served in the Philippines. He passed away March 16, 1983, shortly after their 40th wedding anniversary.

Alberta was active in the West Lawn Presbyterian Church and later the South Sioux City First Presbyterian Church. She was a librarian for the Sioux City Public Library until 1988 when she moved to Denver and worked at a library there until 2001. After her retirement, she volunteered at Chatfield Arboretum.

She loved the outdoors, especially the fall colors of Aspen, gardening, bird watching, swimming, playing golf, big band music and Halloween.

Alberta is survived by her son, Randall (Marilyn) Nelson of Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Linda (Joseph) Cassity of Sioux City; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband James.
